The Joyner Marina is home to about seventy boats. It is also home for Sue Vann, its dock master. “This is home. I live where I work, and work where I live,” she said. “When I say I work 24-7, I pretty much mean that.” The marina’s central location, nestled inside the Intracoastal Waterway, makes it a prime spot to park anything from a yacht to a kayak. Laura Dill is visiting from Rock Hill, SC and said, “It is very nice, it is a quiet marina. We are in a condo right here so it is really convenient just to walk down and get on your boat and go. It is easy access to everywhere.” The marina is just one of the many places that add to the revitalization of Carolina Beach. About a year ago, the marina was completely revamped. Vann said, “This place has come to life in the last couple of years. We have done a complete renovation to the whole marina. We have torn out the old docks, and rebuilt them out of this beautiful Brazilian hardwood.” Residents said they have noticed the positive changes. “We have all been very happy about this place because it was so empty, for so long and now there are so many boats here. It is great for them because it is more business for the place and everything,” said Gabrielle Vaughn. And business is good, despite a slow economy. Vann said almost every slip is spoken for. But beyond a place to park, the marina makes it easy for boaters to enjoy what the water has to offer. “It is really fun, especially when you get out on the water and you just see all the nature around you,” said Brice Landstreet of Rock Hill, SC.
