Cape Fear River swimming area contaminated

READ MORE: Cape Fear River swimming area contaminated
NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- Swimmers beware: county officials have deemed a popular Cape Fear River swimming site unsafe. Researchers say the waters are contaminated. Researchers from UNCW found high levels of fecal bacteria in a popular swimming site in Castle Hayne. The county posted warning signs at the site near the New Hanover, Pender County line. Researchers say it's either a leaky sewer pipe or the result of too many ducks in the area and polluting the waters. Swimming in the water is still allowed but researchers say swimmers run the risk of getting sick. Some residents who've swam in the area were surprised when they saw the signs Thursday. Robert Canedy grew up near the swimming area. He said, "This is a poor man's beach. They call it redneck beach or whatever. You know, we can't go to Wrightsville Beach, or Carolina Beach or the beaches because they can't afford the parking and all this. So they come here to enjoy themselves." Canedy, for one, says he's upset over this. Researchers say if they can identify the source of the pollution, they can make the river safe to swim in by this summer. The UNCW researchers testing the water said they warned the county about this months ago. Calls to the county health department have not been returned.

wow

We found a problem ,,,,,,,,whos fixing it,,,,,,an how long is it going to take???????? UNREAL

Has the bad water passed??

Should we fix this problem before the cement plant comes to town.. Or fix both problems afterward ?? At a public park there should be a restroom. There is no facility there .. Maybe the people are just going in the water. The signs are still up now 2/7/09 almost a year later. They must be working hard on the problem..

Cape "Fear" RIver

A complete water quality report on the lower Cape Fear river, would most likely create fear in those that drink and use the river water. It has been rated the eighth most polluted river in the nation. When you think how many pollutants, from how many different sources, are a part of the river once it reaches Wilmington, well it's just plain fearful. We are the end of the line. I've heard that just south of Wilmington, raw sewage was piped into the Cape Fear river bottom for over fifteen years. That sounds like a nice final touch for our area residents. I envy cities that have a nice clean reservoir.

Too bad...

This is a really nice area to hang out with in the summer with family and friends.
