Carolina Beach looks to purchase land for pier, holds public meeting Tuesday

The Town of Carolina Beach will hold a public meeting Tuesday night to consider the purchase of property to build a pier for the North Carolina Aquarium system. The price tag is just more than $4 million for the property, which totals more than two acres. The town hopes grant money will pay for the purchase. If not, the money may have to come from a property tax increase of 1.5 cents per 100 dollars of value. Town manager Tim Owens explained the rationale behind the pier project, which would potentially boost Pleasure Island tourism. “Our role is to provide the parking and amenities for it. The state would then seek the funding to build the aquarium here,” he said. “The pier would be a 1,000 feet long and made of concrete. It's a large site that's centrally located near our marina. If it does move forward it's in a very strategic location. Some of the funding will have to be through grants that we will pursue and through some debt services that we'll retire, and yes there's potential for a tax increase based on the amount of debt services that we'll have to undertake.” The town council meeting starts Tuesday night at 7:30 at Carolina Beach Town Hall. Owens said there is a chance the town will take action on the pier plan at that meeting.

I'm all for it although it

I'm all for it although it will probably bring an increase of around $75 for my property tax bill. But that's OK, I'd prefer to see my tax money go to a project that will enhance the town then to some huge pot in Raleigh. I wouldn't even mind a small tax raise to pay for the CBD road improvements (including sidewalks & beautification). Anything that moves this town forward, well, I'm for it!

Build it at the Boardwalk

It would make more sense instead of spending tax payers dollars for land to build the pier at the board walk which the town already owns. The only problem there is parking just like anywhere else at the beach. If you look back in history that is where the pier was located before Hazel.

CB Pier

Pier sounds fantastic for Carolina Beach. Considering to raise property taxes on the property owners when they can't even sell their property at tax value is sinful. Some owners tax bills multiplied by 4 (both my parents tax bills X4) plus with the increase in insurance & the water bill. Mayor & Counsel need to seriously consider the extreme burden they will place on the property owners during this economic downturn. I work for a bankruptcy attorney plus foreclosures & CB is bankruptcy & foreclosure capital in our area.
