Cedric Dickerson plays role of coach, mentor and role model

READ MORE: Cedric Dickerson plays role of coach, mentor and role model
Underneath the suit and tie stands a man who is considered a coach, a mentor and a role model. “I don't sit around and say, ‘I need to go do this,’ it's just that I'm naturally drawn to people and being involved,” said Dickerson. Cedric Dickerson might work full time as an insurance agent, but you could also say he works full time as a proponent for youth. He is the president of the board for the Wilmington community Boys and Girls Club; a role that allows him to make a difference in the lives of children. “I see a tremendous potential in youth of today. I know in many cases, they don't always get a positive spin, but they are faced with a very complex world which makes it difficult for them to navigate through,” Dickerson said. “Sometimes they fail, but I think the tests may be a little tougher for them than it was for me. Life was very simple when I was coming through and temptations and challenges were not as great.” As well as trying to keep kids on the right track at the community Boys and Girls Club, Dickerson also volunteers as a Laney High School basketball coach. It is a "job" he's had for nearly two decades. “I've always had a deep passion for sports, which leads me naturally to youth. I was a person who enjoyed playing, so I guess when my playing days started to wind down I had to find another venue where I could vent that energy,” he said. As well as helping children, Dickerson has also served on numerous community boards and committees. It is work he enjoys doing, not to receive recognition. But if he were to be remembered, “I would want them to think I was an honest man and I would want them to think I was an unselfish man and that in my time here I was able to make some sort of difference because of things I participate in and assist and help in.” Friday and Monday we will introduce you to the two other Razor Walker Award winners. All of this year's Razor Walker Award recipients will be honored at a banquet Monday night at UNCW.

Mr. D's Passion For Youth Reaches Far Beyond Hanover County

Cedric's passion and involvement in community programs for our youth reach far beyond Hanover County...but also in Wayne County NC (the roots of his youth), as well as Gwinnett County GA. His support in youth programs in and around Goldsboro NC and Norcross GA has enabled many young people to continue on in higher education, to remain involved in community sports, and to provide much needed items to those who may otherwise go without. He continues to make us all proud here in Goldsboro.

Mr. Dickerson

Somethings DON'T change and that is good to know. I went to Laney with Mr. D's two sons and I can remember him always being encouraging and supportive.
