CFPUA shutting down water line around 5th Street and Cornelius Harnett Drive

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) - On Wednesday, December 1st, the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will be facilitating the shut-down of a water line in the area of 5th Street and Cornelius Harnett Drive at a location between Sweeney and the MLK Parkway.

This shut-down from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. is being conducted to allow for a contractor to remove a defective 24" line that failed in July of this year and to tie in a new 24" line that has been installed from the plant. While no impact to water production or distribution from Sweeney is anticipated, there is the possibility that some customers may experience low pressure during the shut-down period.

Additionally, once the new line is placed into service, some customers in the downtown area may experience periods of air in their lines and possible discoloration. Discoloration is the presence of naturally occurring deposits that have accumulated inside a water pipe and have been loosened during pressure changes within a line. Customers experiencing discoloration are encouraged to run their water until it clears.

CFPUA water quality staff will be monitoring and flushing strategic locations to minimize the effects to customers. Additional advisories, if warranted, will be distributed via press release, posted on our web and sent via our ‘Notify Me’ text and email feature.
