ONEONTA, N.Y. – Kyle Hall’s goal midway through the second half proved to be the difference as Syracuse edged UNC Wilmington, 1-0, in men’s college soccer action Friday in the first game of the Mayors Cup Classic at Elmore Field.

The Orange improved to 2-0-1 with the win and ran their non-conference unbeaten streak, which dates back to 2005, to 16. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fell to 1-2 and will close out their tournament appearance on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff against host Hartwick.

“We’re disappointed with the result after playing well,” said Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “We were able to limited their opportunities, but weren’t able to create much ourselves. We made one mistake and they were able to capitalize on it.”

Hall, a senior forward, notched his second goal of the season at the 68:26 mark following a UNCW turnover at midfield. Sophomore Geoff Lytle intercepted a pass and penetrated the Seahawk defense when he found Hall open in the middle of field. Hall settled the short pass and beat UNCW freshman goalkeeper Brandon Miller for the only goal of the game.

The Seahawks held a narrow 7-5 shot advantage and controlled play in the opening half, outshooting SU, 6-3. Senior Robert Cavicchia was up to the task for the Orange, making all three of his saves on the game and keeping the game scoreless in the first half.

Miller, making his first career start for the Seahawks, finished with a save.
