Hartwick rattled off three goals, including two by John Paul Boyle, in the first 22 minutes of the game as the Hawks knocked off UNC Wilmington, 3-1, in men’s college soccer action Sunday at the Mayors Cup Classic at Elmore Field. The Hawks picked up their first win of the season and raised their record to 1-2-1. The Seahawks, meanwhile, fell to 1-3. Boyle, a senior, got Hartwick on the board at the 7:20 mark when he knocked in a short pass from junior Austin McCann and junior Sam Wright made it a 2-goal cushion when his corner kick eluded UNCW sophomore goalkeeper Brock Duckworth at 18:24. Boyle closed out the scoring with a strike in the 22nd minute for a 3-0 Hartwick lead. Boyle had the final touch of ball that was flicked on by freshman Danny Summers. The play started with a throw in by Owen Botting to Summers. UNCW averted a shutout on freshman Matt Brown’s goal in the 75th minute. Sophomore Jeffrey Shapiro sent a cross into the box where Brown’s header from six yards out beat HC keeper Jeremy Vuolo. After being out shot in the opening half, UNCW rallied with an 8-2 advantage in the second half and finished with a 10-9 lead. Duckworth allowed all three goals and freshman Brandon Miller played the final 45 minutes and making a pair of saves. Vuolo, meanwhile, finished with a pair of saves to his credit. The Seahawks return to action on Sept. 12, when they host Dayton in the first day of the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Classic at 7:30 p.m. The weekend tournament opens the same day with Coastal Carolina and Charlotte starting at 5 p.m. -Courtesy UNCW -- Jesse Jones, CAPE FEAR SPORTS REPORT N.C.
