WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington men’s basketball coach Benny Moss and his staff filled a big need, literally, Monday when Ravenscroft High School post player Matt Wilson signed a National Letter of Intent to play next season for the Seahawks.

Wilson, a 6-11, 220-pound center, became UNCW’s first signee for next season. John Fields, a 6-9 transfer from East Carolina who is sitting out this year, will combine with Wilson to give the Seahawks much-needed help inside for the 2009-10 campaign.

“We’re extremely excited to have Matt sign with us, and look forward to having him in the program,” said Moss. “Matt is the consummate student-athlete and will fit into our program very well. He is an exceptional student and tremendous basketball player from a great family.

Wilson averaged 6.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg last season for the Ravens and made the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference (TISAC) All-Conference team.

Moss said: “Matt has a chance to become an impact player as he continues to develop physically. He has the ability to run the floor and jump, with the skill set of a power forward. Matt has a great work ethic and that will serve him well as he makes the transition from high school basketball to the college game.”

Ravenscroft is ranked ninth in the East Region in the PrepNation.com preseason poll. Wilson was one of five Ravenscroft student-athletes who signed NLI’s at the Raleigh school and his teammate, Ryan Kelly, inked with Duke. -Courtesy UNCW
