WILMINGTON, N.C. – One day after having junior pitcher Brad Holt selected with the 33rd pick overall by the New York Mets, UNC Wilmington produced three more draft selections as seniors Jason Appel, Daniel Hargrave (left) and Mark Carver all heard their names called during the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft. Appel was the first to go for the Seahawks on the second day when the Tampa Bay Rays tabbed the speedy outfielder with the first pick of the 22nd round. Appel, who was picked by Philadelphia as a senior in high school, was a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association outfielder and concluded his career with the Seahawks as the school’s all-time hits leader with 260. The Plainview, N.Y., native paced UNCW with a .397 batting average last season while setting career highs in 17 different statistical categories, including batting average, runs (64), doubles (16), home runs (5), runs batted in (53) and stolen bases (21). Hargrave, who was one of six Seahawks to earn All-CAA honors, followed soon when the Philadelphia Phillies selected the middle infielder with their pick in the 22nd round. Hargarve, who hails from Hurdle Mills, N.C., also fashioned a career year as a senior, hitting .333 with 18 home runs and 62 runs batted in. He tied Carver with a school-record 71 runs scored and finished as the program’s all-time leader in totals bases (429) and ranks among the program’s career leaders in 16 offensive categories. Carver, who went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 33rd round, was the Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Year after leading the league in RBI with a school-record 82 and tying for the lead with 21 homers. Carver appeared in all 62 games, including 42 starts at catcher and handled a pitching staff that produced four All-Colonial picks, including Holt. The Wendell, N.C., native topped the Seahawks with 23 multiple RBI games and compiled a .708 slugging percentage. Carver set or tied five UNCW single season records. The Seahawks four total draftees was the second most in a single year for the program. The 2006 club had a school-record six players selected. Draft notes: Appel was the first Seahawk taken by Tampa Bay since 2000 when Daniel Marsh, a catcher, was picked in the 25th round … Hargrave became the third Seahawk, and first since Ronald Hill, to join the Phillies’ organization since 2000 … With the selection of Carver, Pittsburgh has now drafted or signed five Seahawks since 1960.
