COLUMBUS COUNTY -- If you live in Chadbourn and want to apply for zoning and special use permits expect to shell out more than you would have Tuesday. Tuesday night Town Council voted to increase the cost of zoning permits. The town manager says the previous price to apply for a permit didn't cover the actual cost to approve the permit. This is the first time permit fees have been increased in Chadbourn in ten years and town officials say it was necessary. Chadbourn Town Manager Stevie Cox said, "So now the burden of the cost lies on the person applying for the permit instead of lying on the town or the citizens of the town." The cost of zoning permits went up from $10 to $125. The cost of special use and rezoning permits went up from $75 to $400. That price covers advertising the permit, staff time, site plan reviews and other fees associated with the permits.
