Charlotte Coliseum to be demolished

Story body

CHARLOTTE (AP) -- The Charlotte Coliseum is not going to reach its 19th birthday. The building hosted the city's first major pro sports team and brought the Final Four and the NBA All-Star game to Charlotte for the first time. The Charlotte Coliseum will be demolished Sunday, five years after its lack of luxury suites and premium seating led the NBA team to leave town and two years after its glitzy replacement made it redundant. It will be replaced by an office park. Max Muhleman of Private Sports Consulting of Charlotte compared the building to the last propeller airplane before jets arrived. The facility hosted 364 consecutive N-B-A sellouts, the 1994 Final Four, numerous concerts and even a speech by Mother Teresa. It opened in 1988. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press.
