Christmas tree lighting at Wilmington's Hilton Park

A symbol of the holidays came to light at Wilmington's Hilton Park last night. The switch was flipped to light up the world's largest living Christmas tree, including a visit from Santa aboard a Wilmington fire truck. This tree lighting has been a tradition since 1928. Wilmington Mayor, Bill Saffo said, "This is just great. You come out here and see all the kids, with this beautiful Christmas tree, which by the way is the world’s largest living tree - southern live oak tree. So it's just nice to be here and see all the excitement in our beautiful city of Wilmington, NC." A former mayor once asked school children what their favorite tree in the city was. They said this oak in Hilton Park, and the Christmas tradition has continued ever since.

Christmas Tree

I remember my Parents taking me out to see the Christmas Tree when I was a a kid. Back in those days J.E.L. Wade was Santa. I am now 72 years old and I am glad to see that the tree is still there and I hope it will be there for many more years.
