City Council looks at employee pay scales, rash of shootings

WILMINGTON -- The City of Wilmington will take a look at employee pay scales after the City Council Tuesday night voted to hire an outside firm to help. City firefighters, who continue to push for bigger raises, are happy about that. Also on Tuesday night's agenda, council discussed the recent rash of shootings in Wilmington. Several of them were fatal. Wilmington City Councilman Earl Sheridan said, "I am concerned, as are you and many residents, about the recent rash of shootings in the community." Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said, "And there is a lot of concern amongst mothers and teachers about the proliferation of gangs in our community, and I'd like to convene a summit." Mayor Saffo says he will start making calls Wednesday to put that summit together. He plans to involve law enforcement, the school system and anyone else who can help.
