There was quite a battle at Buck Hardy field Monday night. It was a clash of the titans as Wilmington Police took on Wilmington Firefighters.

A good crowd turned out for the game. Allegiances were split, although the firemen did some good pre-game marketing with fire hats.

On the field it was a nail biter. We found the mayor standing on the firefighters' side when we arrived, but he said he was a man on the move as we tried to pin him down. “I am going to go back and forth. I love them both. I’ll say this – youth to the police, experience to the fire department. They are both great teams,” Mayor Saffo said.

The firefighters blew it open with a five-run fifth inning, but the cops clawed back to within one in the seventh.

The final: 9-8 Wilmington Firefighters.

Proceeds from the game go to the police memorial fund and a fund for the family of Ed Kramer, the National Guard soldier and former Wilmington firefighter killed last month in Iraq.

Congratulations

Congrats to Wilmington's Bravest and to Wilmington's Finest. Hopefully some good fun for everyone while raising money for two very deserving causes. Great idea for an inexpensive night of fun for the family.
