Colbert files for presidential primary

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Comedian Stephen Colbert has filed to run in the South Carolina Democratic presidential primary. State party chairwoman Carol Fowler says Colbert's campaign paid the $2,500 filing fee just before today's noon deadline. Colbert poses as a conservative talk show host on the Comedy Central cable network. The Charleston native says he'll only campaign in South Carolina. He said earlier he would run in both the Democratic and Republican primaries. It's unclear if he'll appear on the ballot. Colbert doesn't appear to meet the party's viable candidate qualification. Colbert did appear Sunday at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. The Republican Party filing fee is $35,000 and the deadline is this afternoon. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press.
