A Columbus County Democrat has thrown his name in the hat to challenge Rex Gore in the upcoming district attorney's race.
Harold "Butch" Pope is a criminal defense attorney in Whiteville. He has announced his intentions to run for district attorney of Columbus, Brunswick, and Bladen County.
Pope said that Rex Gore's failure to immediately recuse himself in the investigation of State Senator RC Soles prompted him to run for office.
Soles and Gore have a long history as political allies.
The SBI is looking into a shooting at the senator's house, where Soles shot one of his clients for allegedly trying to break in.
The state is also investigating claims of sexual misconduct by the senator.

Time for change
It certainly is a time for change. Our current Brunswick County Officials are nothing but a good old boys system. The current County Officials and no interest in justice. They blatantly do not follow their own ordinances, yet expect the citizens of Brunswick County to do so. Attorney Gore is not interested in pursuing the truth. It comes down to who knows who as to whether or not Attorney Gore or his assistance will help. I personally have had issues where the current DA has no interest in pursuing crimes such as perjury and harassment along with other crimes. The current District Attorneys lack of interest in pursuing justice, has put me in a position of living in fear. Anyone has got to be better than the people currently in office.
new d.a.
Butch Pope
Butch has my support!!!
IS he any better
H.G. "Butch" Pope
Butch would do a WONDERFUL
GO BUTCH GO. HE'S THE MAN
Good time to get the crooks out of office.
Good time to change DA in Brunswick County
Better than that district
So far from the truth. I
So far from the truth. I know Butch Pope and he is certainly a nice guy. That's why every attorney in Columbus County wants him to be their DA. They want a push over, someone they can make backroom deals with. Butch is a man who has spent the better part of 25 years defending murders, thieves and rapists. Now he wants to prosecute them? Are you kidding me? He will not be on the side of families, but on the side of his buddies legal buddies that put him there.
John David is a Prosecutor. It's what he has been since the day he graduated law school. He is a hard working man that has zero "good-ol'boy" ties to Columbus County and he is a man that has proven throughout his whole career that he is on the side of victims and their families. He will prosecute murders, rapists and thieves to the fullest extent of the law and he will reduce the back room deals and prosecute cases in the courtroom like our judicial system intended.
RE: so far from the truth
It would be an honor to have someone such as Jon David to become our DA. My wishes for sometime that he would win. Mr. David, we do have good people in Brunswick County that could be of service to you. You are an educated man, trust no one, and make that office yours.
