Columbus County student allegedly assaulted by teacher

READ MORE: Teacher allegedly assaulted student in Columbus County
coco1300.jpg
A Columbus County dad is sticking by his nine year old son. He said he was allegedly assaulted by his fourth grade teacher. Antonio Graham said his son came home from school last week practically in tears. He said at the end of the school day he was hit, and kicked, by his teacher, Elizabeth Joyce West. "She punched him on the arm, upside his head with a closed fist, and kicked him," said Mr. Graham. That was nearly two weeks ago. Since then, Graham has filed a police report, and asked for his son to be switched to a different class. Both the principal and superintendent said they would not take a student out of a class halfway through the year. Superintendent Dan Strickland said the Board of Education investigated the alleged incident, but closed the case saying there was not enough evidence. "They opened up an investigation and then the teacher denied all the allegations. She didn't own up to nothing," said Graham. Graham's son said he was drinking at the water fountain on November 7th when a couple kids pushed him from behind. He said that is when Ms. West blamed him for starting trouble, made him wait in the classroom after school, and allegedly hurt him. Antonio added, "My little boy challenged her authority, by trying to explain himself, and we've taught him that. That he can explain himself, and voice his opinion on things; because that's the way we brought him up." Graham said his son goes to school every day, worried about what might happen next. He said he and his wife do not want to see Ms. West lose her job, but they do want an apology, recognition of guilt, and peace of mind that their son is safe behind the doors of Evergreen Elementary. "We send our kids to school, and hope that they will be protected, and that the school system will put our children in the forefront as far as protecting them, and making sure they are taught," said Graham. WWAY chose not to use the boy's name or photo, to protect his privacy.

assualted child

My 8 yr old son was slapped in the face by a second grade teacher at his school. I also filed a police report. It will be a month on March 13, 2009. I am not getting any cooperation with the school district. I have been banned from the school property. The teacher stated in the police report that "She may have hit him she doesn't remember. The school district has come to the conclusion that nothing happened and has dropped the investigation. I am still fighting the case. I have involved the NAACP, news stations, newspapers, and anyone I can think of to help. Don't give up and let that teacher get away with hitting your child.

This is why you always have

This is why you always have a witness with you when you talk to a student. Heck these days I would video it.

If

the child were "hit up along side the head" and kicked, there should have been some marks. It would seem a proper response by the Parent would have been to meet with the Teacher and Principal. Did he do that? There is no indication he did. But he did file a police report and he went to the media. Is he setting the stage for a lawsuit? "My little boy challenged her authority..." I guess in today's society a 9 year old has a better sense of right and wrong than a college educated teacher of many years tenure. No wonder we have problems in our society. Children are not dumb. They know how to manipulate. They know how to suqeeze their arms and create marks. I hope this parent keeps pushing. If the teacher is found to have erred, then pay the piper. But, if the child lied or used a creative imagination, then let the parent wear a sign stating "MY SON LIED ABOUT HIS TEACHER" That would seem fair.

Teacher

First of all I work with the school system, and I have had 2 kids that have been in Mrs. West's class over the last 10 years, and both of my kids have loved this women, they have always said good things about her and they loved going to her class. I have known this lady evry since I was a student at Evergreen myself and she was one of the nicest teachers there, and she takes alot of time with your child if they need extra help and will go out of her way to give them that extra help. So before you start saying what people ought to do start looking at the facts and then decide. I have seen students get up in teacher's faces and yell and then want to blame the teacher when they get home, and the parent come to school ready to crucify that teacher until they actually find out the whole story when they get to the school, and then they are the ones that look stuip because they believe what there child says before that get the whole story. I have always told my kids that if you have a problem let me know about it, but then I get the whole story before I accuse anyone of anything. KIDS SOMETIMES DO LIE TO COVER THERE OWN A----. Hang in there Mrs. West you do have alot of support from alot of parents, and don't let these few parents that are bad mouthing you make you leave, because there are alot of students that will miss having the chance to get to know you.

MY OPINIONS TO EVERYONE ELSES

THIS IS MY OPINION ...YA'LL KNOW SOME OF THESE PEOPLE OUT THERE WOULD DO SUCH A THING...NOW IF IT WERE UR KIDS YOU ALL WILL HAVE SUCH THINGS TO SAY ...PEOPLE IN THE WORLD NEED TO GET A GRIP...ALL I SAY IS THEY CAN PUSH MORE THROUGH THE INVESTIGATION AND GIVE A LIE DETECTOR TEST AND IF THE TEACHER FAILS SHE SHOULD BE REVOKED FROM THE SCHOOL WHICH WE DONT WANT BUT IF SHE DONE IT TO ONE SHE WILL DO IT TO ANOTHER AND IM PRETTY SURE NO ONE WANTS THAT....THIS IS A CRAZY WORLD AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET ALONE WIT THIS CULTURE AND DO WHAT THERE IS DESIRED TO DO...KIDS GO TO SCHOOL TO GET THERE EDUCATION AN YES THERE ARE SOME BULLIES IN SCHOOLS AND YOU CANT JUST BLAME ONE YOU HAVE TO HEAR ALL SIDES OF THE SITUATION IF YOU DONT KNO WHAT HAPPEN U CAN HOLD ON FOR EVERYONE ELSES BLAME....AN SOMETIMES ITS BEST TO LET KIDS SAY WHAT THEY WANT TO GET OUT ...WE NEED THERE POINT OF VIEW SOMETIME...KIDS IN THIS WORLD ARE NOT SLOW THEY ARE SMART AND INTELLIGENT JUST LIKE THE ADULTS...MAYBE A LITTLE SMARTER....

Abuse is abuse, no matter who does it or where it happens.

Several months ago, we saw the demise of an Anti-Abuse (Anti-Bullying) law because a large group of bigots thought that abusing children in the name of their religion was a Right under the Constitution. Now, we're seeing some of the backlash. A kid is assaulted at the water fountain, and a teacher sides with the abusers, punishing the victim. When the victim stands up to verbal and mental abuse, he is physically assaulted. Moreover, we're seeing the REAL beginnings of an abuse victim. Don't stand up to an authority figure who is abusing you? How many authority figures, such as school officials, police officers, even business supervisors and family members have used such an argument to justify their right to verbally, mentally, physically, and/or sexually abuse others, including adults AND children? How often have we heard "why didn't they report their abuse? They must have been weak, wimps, or even liked the abuse". Even though we are now saying this kid should just take it because it was an authority figure. It's the Parent's fault. It's the music they listen to. It's the computer/video games they play. It's the movies/TV shows/books they are exposed to. But when a kid is assualted first by other students then by an authority figure, whose fault is it? Kids should be seen and not heard. I'm sure a lot of abusers, whether they be child molestors, family abusers, abusers in the schools (from students to faculty), community abusers (like gangs or even gang-wannabes) want you to believe that. That way, when the victim commits suicide, becomes a victim for the rest of their lives, or goes out and strikes back in a wild rampage, the abusers can look all pristine and saintly while spouting all sorts of sensationalistic garbage and spewing out all sorts of scapegoats, avoiding their own responsibility. Kids lie? Maybe. But so do adults. Whether they are abusers OR victims. Wanna come straight out and say every victim who goes to a Rape Crisis Center or Domestic Violence Shelter is a liar and we should close them down altogether? Go ahead. I DARE you. And don't be anonymous about it either. Andrew Rhodes

Teachers abusing kids

The middle school my kids attend in Amarillo Texas is set out to punish any kids who tell on a teacher. My son was assulted by a teacher. The teacher admited it. He offer to appoligize but we didn't want to put our child through it. Two months after this happened he called the police on my child for talking in class. We have to go to court. He totally got away with it. My son has never set foot in his class since the assult. Why would he wait two months. He found out he was in trouble and wanted to burn my son.The school and school board did nothing. He is still there, teaching choir, talking, about his pennis size, girls boobs, abortion etc. They have been told and do nothing to him. My son on the other hand just got 2 days ISS and no one will tell me why. I asked the teacher, prncipal, and the head over our school district. Still no answer. Well I have an answer, harrasement for telling on teachers. He has also been refused to get to eat lunch and much more.

parentsdontparentanymore

There is not a school district around that wouldn't throw their teachers under the bus just to keep their noses clean. If they did an investigation and found nothing I believe there is nothing. I hope this teacher takes this parent for everything they are worth with a slander suit. A teacher is only as good as their reputation around here and this parent is ruininng it. 1 good law suit will make parents think twice about making false claims against teachers, doctors and all other professionals just doing their jobs.

This is not the first time..

First of all, I would like to say that I am the parent of 2 children that have been in her class. When the younger one was in her class is when we realized we were gonna have issues. My child is an A-B student who always loved to go to school. This is until she got into this class. We went thru the everyday of "What's gonna happen today, what will I get yelled at for?" I attempted to go thru the proper channels to get the situation handled only to get yelled and screamed and belittled by Mrs. West. And yes the principal was in the same room and said nothing. I attempted to have her removed only to be told the year would have to be finished in her class. There are many parents whom have gone thru this same ordeal. Just because she has been teaching 100 years she is always right. I think the family should inquire about this to the fullest extent. Just know that there are other parents who have been through the same thing. Its time something is done.

What's next?

In the article, the child said he was being bullied by several other students while using the water fountain. Sounds like the child may be fabricating something to keep from getting his butt beat by classmates. It has been a long time since I was in school, but this does happen and instead of blaming fellow students, the child places the blame on a teacher or other adult. How convenient? Get to the bottom of it and talk to the other children in line during this supposed incident. Not too many teachers out there who would hit a child and keep their job. But since it is Columbus County who knows what will happen. Good luck to both

Why does everyone rush to judgment?

Most of the comments on here have said how the teacher should be fired and all. what most of you have forgotten in your rush is that kids do lie. I'm not saying the teacher did or did not do these things but obviously the school system did look into these accusations and found now real evidence of any wrong doing. I know working with the public years ago a 10 year old boy was throwing things on the floor and i asked him to pick them up. He ran off to his mom and said I had cussed him out and threatened him. She went home and got her husband who wanted to come back and fight me all because parents rush to believe that everything there little angels say are the truth.

Why do 9 yr. olds question authority?

Did this kid have any marks on him? If not, one might want to look into weather or not the teacher had ever had these type of complaints before. Does this child have behavior problems? If in fact, the school thought for one minute that the teacher has assulted the student, she would have been removed. Seeing as how it was looked at and dropped so quickly, it looks lke the child is the problem. No child at the age of 9 should be taught to question authority. He should be taught to respect authority!!! His father tells us alot.

Why do 9 yr. olds question authority?

Amen!

MAKES NO SENSE

First & foremost; for a grown person to place their hands on a child that doesn't belong to them in this time is nonsense.I know this young man personally; and one thing is definate this kid IS an honest kid.Back along time ago , teachers were given the right to spank your child at school. That is before an abuse ( not assault )case came up on a teacher. No one wants to address the Real issue as to why teachers, administrators & students are losing their minds in schools . The real issue is the word GOD being taken out of everyday lives. Before this ; you rarely heard of situations like this. GOD is the reason for all the world. Once you take your eyes off him , you have a world like this where teachers paitence is so short that they strike at innocent children and lie about it , and they call themselves christian; go figure. The fact remains is that without God in any aspect of your lives you end up with people taking and interpeting the rules to fit their own lifestyles. And you can quote me on this.

authority

Yes the 9 year old should be able to question authority. This is America were u have the right to question anything. You teach your child to scream and run away, and get help when approched by a stranger. This teacher is someone the child trusted. What is this world comming to. People listen to your children. Dont let this go.... This situation may have been dropped so quickly because someone maybe covering something up. Mistakes happen, u just have to pay the price once your ever caught. Everything done in the dark will come to light..

Columbus County teacher

Wow that county is living in the old days. Where I grew up, if that happened today the teacher would be out the door in a minute. And it goes both ways too. My daughter is a HS teacher and was threatened by a student. The student was suspended. I am not happy this happened to the student but children go to school and they and teachers are expected to be protected & safe. End of story !

Paper trail

Start a paper trail. To the school principal to the school board, Start writting letters, To you county commissoner. Get something down in writting of your complaints. It looks like to me if the school has nothing to hide or cover they would move the child just so there would no other questions until they can get all the details worked out. Our kid and teachers need to be protect.

Thankfully, my child is in

Thankfully, my child is in Whiteville City schools where you get a little more respect from the principals. I would get a lawyer. My child would not sit in a classroom where a teacher had assaulted him/her. Bullying is not tolerated if it's the students doing it and it should not be tolerated if it's a teacher. I would not want this person close to my child and she SHOULD be fired. Don't drop it. Your child deserves a decent education in a safe environment. Don't let them win.

Columbus county school

Columbus county school system is a safe and wonderful public enviroment. The only reason people want there children to go to whiteville is so they can be some of the stuck up childern you ever see.. Look at central middle school located near the prime areas of drug and violence... Most of columbus countys schools are located in safe enviroments. No only for the students but for the faculty as well.. West Columbus high school i will say is a fine establishment for students to go to..West is not what people think it is..The students and teachers are great..Just because a few bad kids do things doesnt mean the entire school is like that.. And futher more how can whiteville school systems get the money that our columbus county schools should be getting..Whiteville isnt even part of us.. I think everyone needs to add some religon or JESUS to there life! Thank You! God Bless!!

Please do not drop it. Your

Please do not drop it. Your child deserves to be treated with respect. He was in school.Someone needs to keep an eye on that teacher...who knows how many children have been abused by that teacher...

This is not the first time..

First of all I can speak from 1st hand experience. My child was in her class, and it was something everyday. Now I will remind u my child has A's and B's on her report card, so its not like my child is a problem student. It went so far as many trips to the office for me basically to be told that no one would run her class but her. My child hated school and would go whats gonna happen today. At the awards ceremony I have it on video where she snatched her award out of my childs hand just to be a tailhole. She needs to retire and go home. There are very few parents that have had a child in her class that havent had problems. She is the teacher that everyone hopes their kids dont get. She thinks because she has been teachin for 100 years that the world revolves around her. And dont think you are gonna get the administration on your side because I was basically told my child would have to stick it out in her class. I think the parent should take it to the fullest extent to get to the bottom of it. Trust me there are parents out there that will support you to the fullest.

What about evidence?

So anytime a child says his teacher hit him, the teacher should be fired? What about innocent until proven guilty? Remember the Salem Witch Trials? Several people were hanged as witches because several children lied and said they were being "tormented" by the alleged witches. That's why we have due process in this country now. And, yes, children do lie about things. I'm not saying that this child lied, because I don't know any details of this particular case, but there needs to be some kind of evidence as opposed to just the word of someone.
