Satellite TV (DirecTV and DISH Network) have always been DIGITAL, but their signals are not nearly as good as what is being broadcast over the air digitally. It all depends on the amount of compression being used on a particular signal. And, standard-definition "locals" (via satellite) are notorious for being over-compressed. Spend the 20-bucks to get a box. Try it out. You'll be impressed.
