Tropical storm Hanna's approach was watched closely by many in the port city. Around 3:00 a.m. a crowd along Eastwood Road decided to feel her breeze. Gina Guglielmo of Wilmington said, “Because it's not raining which I think is really bizarre, so we decided to come out in the wind, because there's no rain and just have a good time. Yeah.” Others like UNCW student Mandy Bolick chose to grab a bite to eat at Jimbo’s while awaiting the storm. “We were at a hurricane party, but a lightning bolt hit a transformer so we decided to come to Jimbo’s and have breakfast...really early,” said Bolick. Power outages were a common sight around town, even at Jimbo’s, a diner that has weathered several storms. As the lights flickered out at Jimbo’s, cook Grant Thompson said, “We were shut down at one time, and here it goes again.” Hanna finally came through Wilmington around 5:00 a.m., bringing rain and strong wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour. A massive tree was no match for Hanna. The tree fell on top of a house on Meares Street. Luckily the people inside weren't injured. And Hanna's winds caused major damage to a roof of a Scotchman gas station off Carolina Beach Road. There were no reports of any major flooding in the area. At last check, crews are still working to restore power in places affected by Hanna.
