Caldwell furniture company gets NC grant to expand

RALEIGH -- A furniture company plans to add hundreds of manufacturing and staff jobs in Caldwell County with the help of a state grant. Gov. Mike Easley on Thursday said that Broyhill Furniture Industries Inc. has received a $2 million grant to consolidate two of its manufacturing plants into its Lenoir facility and expand operations there. The company said most of the workers at the plants that are to be moved to Lenoir will be offered jobs at the new plant. Broyhill will pump $3 million into the expansion effort, which could create up to 432 new jobs. Those jobs will pay an average salary of more than $32,000, which is more than the county average of $28,000. Broyhill employs more than 1,200 North Carolina residents and is a subsidiary of Furniture Brands International. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
