Wrightsville Beach considering surf zone changes

READ MORE:
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- The weather is warming up and the beaches are getting packed. That has town leaders at Wrightsville Beach once again thinking about changes to the surf zone rules. For years surfers at Wrightsville Beach have dealt with a rotating surf zone that changes day to day. But now the town is looking at making surf zones more permanent. Tony Butler rides the waves at Wrightsville Beach almost every day. He's also had to deal with the town's rotating surf zones, which he calls outdated and confusing. Butler said, "It's really, really hard to keep up with. A rotating zone, everyday for 30 days, you have to memorize the streets, one day you may come down and park and the zone is down the street and you have to walk 12 blocks." For the visiting surfers and families that you know, come down to the beach, it is impossible to keep up with." Thursday night town hall discussed changing the surf zones from rotating to permanent. The plan prevents surfing within 100 yards of lifeguard stands. "I think it will actually make it a safer beach. It will put surfers away from lifeguard stands and swimmers near lifeguard stands, and that's what this is really all about," Butler said. Right now surfing is limited between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The new plan would limit surfing in the designated zones from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local surfer Bill Columbus said, "It's going to take away time from surfing everyday, about an hour in the morning and an hour at night each day, but I guess in time we can get used to it." The zones would affect more than surfers. Skim boarders, kayakers and kite surfers would also be affected by the proposed surf zones. "It's better safety for swimmers and surfers all together, and just move forward, let's try and make some changes and if it doesn't work, we can always tweak it," Columbus said. Town administrators say they will discuss the surf zones again in April.
