LELAND -- Earlier this month we told you about a golf tournament that raised money for law enforcement officers in need. One of the candidates was former New Hanover County Sheriff's deputy Chris Long. Wednesday event organizers decided who will get the money. Chris Long will benefit from the Local Heroes golf tournament. The golf tournament held earlier this month at Magnolia Greens raised $5,000. Event organizers decided Wednesday $3,000 will go to help pay for Chris Long's defense attorney and $1,000 will go to a New Hanover County deputy whose sister has cancer. The remaining $1,000 will remain in the Local Heroes account. Peyton Strickland's family released a statement concerning the tournament. It reads: "Former Sheriff Chis Long killed our son Peyton. Without provocation Long fired a burst of .45 caliber hollow point bullets from his submachine gun through the closed door of Peyton's home. Peyton, an unarmed college student, was merely answering his door as the bullets ripped through his head and chest. We are shocked that anyone would call Peyton's killer a Local Hero." Sheriff Sid Causey and about 140 other law enforcement officers supported the tournament. Causey also donated funds from his campaign to the tournament and to Chris Long.
