And don't think you're the first to make it. I did something very similar years ago, and would have likely died had backup not arrived in time. But like I said, you'll never do it again.
Don't EVER holster your piece until the suspect is on his face, on the ground, with arms outstretched, or kneeling down with legs crossed, hands on his head and fingers interlocked (depending upon your department's policy) and you are ready to cuff him. You can consider the suspect reasonably safe only once they're on and double locked. Until then, he's one step from killing you.
