US Marine to close Navassa facility

270 people will soon be out of work in Brunswick County. Workers at the US Marine Boatyard in Navassa were told Thursday the facility will shut down by the end of the year. The facility is owned by Brunswick Corp, based near Chicago. Three other boat-building plants got the same news Thursday. Overall, 1,450 employees will be affected in four states. A spokesperson says work could resume in Navassa if the economy turns around, but right now the boating industry is hurting. US Marine took over operations at the Navassa plant last summer, and had been hoping to add hundreds more jobs over the next few years.
