BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- A major victory to report tonight for Hugo Neu landfill opponents.
Two bills that would block the proposed Brunswick County landfill passed committees in Raleigh.
If passed in the full house, the legislation would take zoning power for the landfill site away from Navassa and give it to the county.
Brunswick County citizens overwhelmingly oppose the project.
Landfill opponent John Hill said, "We are very appreciative of the leadership in the house this year, just allowing these bills to be heard. Last year, if you recall, they weren't heard at all. They were shelved basically."
There are some Navassa residents who support the landfill. They say it would bring much-needed tax revenue to the town.
