The Secret Life of Bees actress learns from local cellist

READ MORE: The Secret Life of Bees actress learns from local cellist
With the number of movies, independent films, series and pilots filmed in Wilmington there is a chance you will run into someone famous. Or as one musician discovered, you could have an even bigger brush with fame. Cathy Meyer is an accomplished cellist with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. Little did she know her talent would give her a glimpse into the world of movie magic. One day, Meyer received a call asking if she could teach an actress to play the cello for a role in The Secret Life of Bees. WWAY caught up with Cathy recently at rehearsal, who shared what it was like meeting the Grammy Award Winner for the first time. “At first she arrived sort of incognito, with the hat and big coat, a big bodyguard and I thought, Oh boy that's good, He can carry the cellos,” said Meyer. After that, the two began meeting several times a week, practicing whenever and wherever they could. Meyer said, “I’d be in the middle of a Wilmington Symphony and I'd get this text. So I'd go to Wrightsville Beach and stay till one o'clock in the morning working with Alicia Keyes on the cello.” Meyer would even go on location. At times, she was even inside the house where they were filming to squeeze in a lesson with Keyes. “I'd know when we were coming up; it would say ‘June plays the back piece on the cello as all who love may stand together’. I knew exactly what was supposed to happen, so it was really fun being able to read the script and know exactly what was happening,” Meyer said. Cathy did not want to just teach Keyes how to hold the instrument while pretending to play. She actually wanted her to learn - and she did. “She was really eager to learn and I was really impressed that, not only was she able to learn, but she was eager to learn,” said Meyer. Cathy said it was incredible working on the set and meeting the other stars of the movie. What did Cathy exactly think of Alicia Keyes? “She's beautiful. She's absolutely beautiful and she's a very talented songwriter. She's a talented musician and she is a wonderful person,” added Meyer. An interesting fact about the movie: When Cathy went to the set, she discovered the original cello the studio wanted Alicia Keyes to use was not accurate for the time. Cathy found a cello in Atlanta that was more appropriate, and that is the cello you will see in the movie.
