beaches need the money

To the person who said renourish our education system; You must not be very informed about the situation with our beaches. Our beaches must have periodic renourishment in order to survive. Back when Wrightsville Beach was first built on, it didn't have much storm protection. High tides used to wash under oceanfront porches. When the USACE constructed "the berm" in the 60's that changed. What used to be a narrow unprotected stretch of sand is now an expansive dune system that protects both property and wildlife. If renourishment is not done then we could end up with a situation like what happened in Rodanthe last week. The beaches in New Hanover County provide millions of dollars to the county property taxes, and also to the Room Occupancy Tax. Not only that, but they are also the economic engine of this region. I realize that our education system is broken, but schools have a much more reliable source of funding than our beaches do with guaranteed money from taxes and the lottery. We are very fortuate to receive this money for the beaches. Before you bash the beaches, do a little research on what they do for this area.
