With Halloween falling on a Friday night, police will be out in force. First Sgt. Al Morris, said, “This time of year, we've got Halloween and Thanksgiving coming up we try to make sure we have all available personal on the highway.” That is because 52 people died in Halloween accidents across the state over a ten year period. The highway patrol will set up DWI checkpoints in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties. Wilmington police are going to be out in full force; setting up DWI checkpoints around downtown. Bars and clubs are also taking safety precautions. “Tonight we have twice as many people working security as we normally do. We have a lot more people looking out for underage kids marking X's on their hands, trying to keep inebriated people from driving,” said local club bouncer, Ben Brown. Police are asking partiers to take a cab home, or stay overnight at the party if the situation allows. Kelli Britt plans on drinking at the club tonight, and does not plan on driving herself home. “I don't want to get in any drama with that situation. Too many accidents happen so were going to try to be safe all night, and no drinking or driving,” she said. If you plan to wear a costume tonight, state law says no one at least 16 years old can wear a mask, hood, or a disguise on public streets. It would be an added offense, if you are charged with something else.
