WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- The Wrightsville Police Department may be able to prosecute drug offenders faster.
Police are testing a piece of law enforcement equipment called NarTest. It tests for marijuana, heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine and ecstasy.
NarTest will allow the department to test substances in-house to determine whether or not they are illegal substances.
Investigator S.P. Appler said, "The benefits are normally when we get narcotics we have to submit them to SPI in Raleigh and they test them in their lab, and it normally takes about a month to seven months to get them back. So now we can test these and have them back with in 15 to 20 minutes"
Detectives from the Wrightsville Police Department are conducting practice tests on substances from past cases to improve their skills in analyzing the results and performing tests.
