Wilmington International Airport is getting bigger. The airport’s new international terminal was officially opened Thursday morning. It is just over 13,000 square feet, and can accommodate 200 people going through customs at a time. It is the first international terminal built in the United States under the new TSA and Homeland Security Guidelines. This means more cameras, security and holding cells. Airport officials hope this convenience and security will lead to more people flying through ILM, bringing more money into the local economy. “It will mean, I think, that Fortune 500 companies will take a real close look at this community and say ‘Hey, why don't we look at putting a facility or satellite facility here in this community’,” said ILM Director, Jon Rosborough Airport officials also hope the expansion will entice additional airlines to Wilmington. The new international terminal cost $3.5 million. Those who use the facility will pay for it through a passenger facility charge. No tax dollars were used to fund the terminal.
