Police-involved Shooting, Wilmington Man Dead

READ MORE:
"To this second right now, the Wilmington Police Department has not given us information of Phillippe." Words of anger amid grief from Phillipe McIver's aunt, Joyce Williams. A highly charged community. Friends and family mourning McIver today. Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said Thursday night, police received multiple complaints about a man near the intersection of Greendale Drive and Princess Place Drive, wearing only a t-shirt, acting erratically. At 11:04 PM, officers tried to get McIver off the street. A struggle began. During a Friday press conference, Evangelous said, "The subject was able to strip the officer's firearm from his holster. The subject fired the gun at Officer (Jason) Whit. Officer Jason Howard, six months on the job, returned fire striking the subject." Evangelous maintained it's not yet known if Officer Howard's shot killed McIver. He said, "We know shots were fired. And we know that he was hit. But there are other circumstances here in play that we can't get into at this point." Police say they used tear gas to break up a large angry crowd that gathered after the shooting. McIver's family wants answers. Joyce Williams said, "I want justice. I can't have his life, but we will get justice. I promise the police department that." The district attorney is asking for cooler heads to prevail until everything is known. Ben David said, "I had the benefit this morning of speaking to Felicia McIver-Phippe McIver's mother-and I asked her to be patient while we gather the evidence. I ask this community for calm while we do this. I promise it will be a fait and thorough of all the facts and evidence." The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct the investigation. It is normal procedure anytime an officer discharges a weapon. Officers Whit and Howard are on administrative leave during the investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday. Phillipe McIver leaves behind a daughter.
