Construction on Military Cutoff has been going on since 2004 and some businesses along that stretch of road say the construction is causing more problems than ever. Is there an end in sight? Lee Grossman has been making sushi for two decades and last year decided to open his own sushi bar, but he had no idea the problems he was in for. He says the construction workers, “busted a water main, causing me to close down my business for a day and a half. We had to go by ice and water just so we could open the next day." The construction on Military Cutoff has caused phone lines to go down a water main to break and many entrances to be closed. These problems mean a loss of customers and money to shops inside the plaza. Grossman says, "if customers can't get in the parking lot that's the first problem and the second problem is if the phone lines are down I can't run a credit card.” The road improvements began in September of 2004. The State Department of Transportation's original completion date was May 15 of this year. The actual completion date remains unclear. Grossman says, "I called the DOT they said it was this construction company. I called the construction company; they said they had a sub-contractor working that day the water main busted. So I couldn't get in touch with any of them." The DOT says by late summer we should see traffic moving more smoothly. State Engineer Kerry Cross says, “Military Cutoff will be in a better situation as soon as possible. Traffic will flow smoother and business access will be as good or better than they had before. We are just trying to get to that end product.” Grossman says, "they are not working responsibly because who's going to hold them accountable for whatever it is that they do, whether they do it wrong, right or they take too long or whether they do it quickly?" The Department of Transportation says they are accountable, but are offering no compensation to businesses that say they have lost money.
