It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas; at least it will after this weekend. Several communities will be lighting their Christmas trees and holding holiday parades. Tree lighting festivities continue this weekend all across the area. Friday night is Calabash's 13th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Santa will show up on a fire engine. It is free and begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Callahan's Christmas Shop parking lot. Just up the road from that, also at 6:00 p.m., a Christmas tree lighting takes place in Shallotte at Rourk Park. Santa arrives at 6:30 p.m. The holiday spirit continues in Shallotte on Saturday with the Christmas parade. It starts at 10:00 a.m. On Friday night, the community gathers to support charity during the 4th Annual Hope from Helen Surf Silent Auction. It runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort in Wrightsville Beach. Hope from Helen supports local and global charities. The Island of Lights Celebration is this weekend at Carolina Beach. The parade travels along Lake Park Boulevard to Atlanta Avenue. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Free parking is available. The celebration continues Saturday night with the Island of Lights Holiday Flotilla. Starting at 6:00 p.m. decorated boats will cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway. Saturday and Sunday the Polar Express is brought to life at the Wilmington Railroad Museum. A conductor will greet the children in attendance, followed by a reading of the classic book. Tickets are $5 per person, children under two are free. There will be two shows each day, one at 4:30 p.m. the other at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required. If you are doing some holiday shopping, an alternative gift market will benefit people living in poverty locally and around the world. You chose what monetary donation you want to give in someone's name, and they will receive a card telling them of your donation. It takes place at Grace United Methodist Church in downtown Wilmington. Saturday hours are from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Sunday it is from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. More holiday fun continues on Sunday with two parades. Whiteville's Christmas Parade starts at 3:00 p.m. Wilmington's 6th Annual Holiday Parade begins at 5:10 p.m. at North Front and Walnut Street. And if you need music to get your spirit soaring, the Brunswick Concert Band and Brunswick Big Band is holding a Christmas concert. Sounds of the Season runs all weekend. Saturday's performance is at 7:30 p.m. at Odell Williamson Auditorium. Sunday's is at 3:00 p.m. at Hatch Auditorium in Caswell Beach. Admission is free and donations are appreciated.
