Presents in small packages could cost you a bit more money this year. The price of gold rose nearly twenty dollars an ounce to almost $800 Monday. Gold prices had hovered around $450 for decades. For most jewelers, that mean's prices for gold jewelry are also up. However, jeweler Michael Kingoff said there are less expensive precious metals for those who want to get a piece of jewelry for someone special. “A good alternative for gold is sterling silver. We carry far more sterling silver in our inventory percentage wise then we did years ago. A lot of your designer lines are in sterling silver and it's a nice item.” If you are looking to buy gold - yellow gold might cost a little less because of the popularity of white gold. For those interested in selling their old jewelry, Kingoff suggested asking a local jeweler before mailing it away. He said jewelry stores will usually beat any price offered by the companies seen on commercials.
