If you are thinking about buying something with a little extra glitter as a present this year, chances are you are also looking for a few more hours at work. But as News Channel 3 found out, many people are happy to get any hours at all. Eric Walker has been filling out applications online, hoping to find a job for the holiday. This year he has a goal. “Get some kind of job in retail because that seems like the only place I can really stick. I've done the restaurant thing, I've done the fast food thing, it's really getting a little old,” he said. But those looking for jobs, at restaurants like the Pilot House, are facing the same struggles. “We're not getting a lot of the larger parties that we have in the past. So therefore we haven't been doing as much hiring,” said Alan Bearce, Pilot House manager. Bearce said he has noticed an increase in applicants, and people are looking for any hours at all. “We've had a lot of people trying to find some part time jobs serving, waiting tables,” he said. According to the Department of Labor, for some, part-time work is the only kind of work. In November, more than 7 million people worked part-time but desired full-time work; a 62 percent increase from a year ago. At Plato's Closet, where the staff is mostly part-time, employees said the best way to get a job is to be flexible. If you can work a lot of times it's going to help out because we know we are going to be able to rely on you if we need you,” said Jheri Evans of Plato’s Closet. Even with an endless number of online applications, the old fashioned way of filling out applications in the store, and searching through the classifieds, those that have applied for many jobs have had little luck. “So far I've gotten one call back and one interview. I've applied at least 15 to 20 places and that's been my only luck. The interview I thought went well, but I never heard anything back,” said Walker. Evan's said right now it's even more important that you're passionate about the job you're applying for. “If you're not the type of person that cares about that sort of things then you’re not going to be help customers as efficiently,” he said. In 1994 the government began keeping track of underemployment, unemployed plus those whose only option is part-time. In November that number reached a record high 12.5 percent.
