A new bicycle is probably on many a child's Christmas list. Each Wal-Mart store is expected to assemble thousands of bikes for the holiday. In fact, they have workers whose only responsibility is to put bikes together all year. Alaun Balloon makes memories like that happen 50 times a day for Wal-Mart customers, and he loves it. “Oh, I like it. It's the best job in the house. I'm back here in my own little world putting bikes together. I can just zone out and do my thing,” said Alaun. “It's kind of like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. You got to tweak the bike, something could go wrong with it, I've never had a bike to go together perfectly. The brakes be out of whack or the gears need adjusting so you have to tweak it just right, so it's that nice smooth ride that people pay their good money for,” he said. Alaun added, “Bikes are real simple, as far as money and affordability. You can get good fun out of them without spending a lot of money. I guess it's that sense of freedom of getting on a bike and just going anywhere. You don't need license. You don't need insurance, just get on your bike and just ride. Even though the economy is not the greatest and people are losing jobs, it's a good inexpensive gift for kids. You know you got all these Playstations and different gaming systems that are costing a couple hundred dollars a pop, at best. A bike is good clean fun. I just want to encourage people to buy bikes.” On average, there are about six people at the store putting bikes together. Workers said it takes them about 10 to 25 minutes to assemble one.
