Wilmington professor denied tenure sues board of trustees

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON (AP) -- A federal lawsuit claims the board of trustees at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington harassed and denied promotion to an associate professor of criminology because of his conservative Christian views.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in US District Court by the Alliance Defense Fund Center for Academic Freedom.

Mike Adams is a national columnist who has taught at the university since 1993 and been an associate professor since 1998. The lawsuit claims Adams was denied his civil rights and promotion to full professor in 2004 and 2006, despite being qualified.

UNC Wilmington issued a statement denying the allegations, saying the decision not to promote Adams was an academic one.
