County solid waste planner Lynn Bestul said New Hanover residents are recycling more than ever. However, due to a slow economy, there is far less demand for recycled materials. Bestul explained, “You and I don't spend as much in the grocery stores or the department stores as we used to which means the manufacturers don't have to make as many pieces of material for us to buy.” Keith Ayscue of Carolina Fiber said the lack of demand is taking a toll on all recycled goods. Experts say demand for some products, like mixed paper recyclables, which include magazines and telephone books has fallen drastically. That type of paper, back in October was selling in the 80 to 90 dollar per ton range. Last month they were about 5 dollars per ton. Even though the value of many recycled materials has hit an all-time low, the holiday season remains one of the busiest times of year for all in the recycling business. But Ayscue said if the situation doesn't change soon some recycling companies won't survive. In some places, companies can't even sell their recyclables at any price. Instead, they are paying to store the materials, hoping the market turns around in the future. While the demand is down for recyclable goods, both men stress now is not the time to stop recycling and doing so would only clog our landfills.
