Social networking sites are not just for socializing anymore. People are using them to promote their business or themselves. Even stay-at-home moms are logging on. And in terms of age demographics, it is out with the young, and in with... everyone. Social networking sites are no longer just for kids; adults are logging on too. Lucy Crockett, a WPD public affairs officer said, "I got the impression when I first became a Facebook member that a lot of people in my age group were just starting to be out there." This year alone, the adult Facebook population has exploded. Facebook reports the over 30 age group now makes up one-third of total users. John Burchetta is president of Burchetta Glass Blowing in Wilmington. He promotes his business on Linked-in, Merchant Circle, and Myspace. “I spend probably at least two hours a day or more on the social-networking sites just keeping in contact with my customers." Now, Bruchetta can't imagine business without it. "It's such an integral part of our business now that if it was just removed, it would feel like I lost an appendage." Of course, reconnecting with friends and family is an added benefit. From the soccer mom to the president-elect, this year everyone seems to be signing up. In 2006, only college students were allowed on Facebook. Today, anyone can join. Facebook has over 140 million users, a few million of whom are over 65.
