Beach day in January

READ MORE: Beach Day In January
No one is hibernating this winter at Wrightsville Beach; especially with our unseasonably warm weather. Surfer Justin Brooks-Ward says, "That's what we are here for, this is why we live at the beach." Jeremy Owens, Captain of Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue says, "We are seeing a tremendous surge of people coming down to the beach, and look at today, it is almost 70 degrees." Ocean Rescue Director Dave Baker agrees. "More and more people are showing up to the beach during the winter, the beach is being utilized, all year round." "You didn't have so many people trying to swim or surf in December four years ago," says Ocean Rescue Lieutenant Jon Mauney. Just a couple days after New Years, the beach is packed with people. Some were brave and attempted to take a dip. Only to find out it's a little warmer on the sand. "More people getting in the water, more people doing things on the sand, and we are out there so often that we know the beaches layout." Since beachgoers never sleep...neither can wrightsville beach ocean rescue. Baker says, "At present we are reactive, and we are trying to make things more reactive." Owens says, "We are here on a response basis, and we are really trying to get more proactive in the winter months." The beach remains a popular destination for most people in Southeastern North Carolina, and with busy off season days like this one in January, it leaves the Ocean Rescue Team with reason to stay on their toes all year round.
