Friends mourn loss of Virginia Tech teacher, former UNC instructor

LAGRANGE, Ga. (AP) -- One of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre was remembered at a memorial service in Georgia as gentle and creative.

Family friends said Jamie Bishop designed the cover for at least one of the books written by his father, science fiction author Michael Bishop.

A small chapel at the 1,000-student LaGrange College where Michael Bishop teaches was packed yesterday evening with students, faculty, staff and community members. Dozens who could not fit in the chapel sat in chairs outside, listening to the prayers and hymns. Another memorial service filled a church in Pine Mountain.

The 35-year-old Bishop had taught German at Virginia Tech for two years. He was in the middle of a class when the gunman entered the classroom Monday morning and opened fire, killing the instructor.

Bishop worked as an academic technology liaison at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2000 to 2005.
