SURF CITY, N.C. (AP) -- High winds and heavy rains that buffeted North Carolina on Sunday and Monday weren't as harmful to Topsail Island as officials had feared.
Employees for all three barrier island towns were out Monday in the gusty wind surveying the dunes and measuring sand erosion.
North Topsail Beach Permits Specialist Terrie Woodle says there was some erosion at the north end of the island, but other than that, officials didn't see much damage.
Surf City just recently received a permit from the Division of Coastal Management to bulldoze sand up to its dunes and began the work on Friday. The work crews were out again Monday pushing more sand onto the dunes.
Topsail Beach suffered some destruction to its dunes in the nor'easter. Town Manager Jim Carter says the dunes that took the biggest hit were ones that the town had just recently bulldozed.
