One professional sports team spent the day hitting the hardwood with local kids at the Wilmington YMCA. Almost 150 future hoop stars spent Saturday polishing their skills with the Wilmington Sea Dawgs as the players and coaches held a free basketball clinic Saturday. The players taught kids some of the fundamentals and ran them through a few drills. The kids were happy learn from some of the players they look up to. Jacob Mohammad was a participant who said of the clinic, “I like the part that all these professional basketball players just come to help us kids.” The team led small groups to teach kids about everything from passing and shooting to teamwork. Players and parents both agree that bringing the Sea Dawgs and the community together was a slam dunk. Sea Dawg leading scorer Cedric McGinnis said, “It's been great. That's one of the greatest things about playing professional basketball, you get a chance to work with the kids and just give back.” Janette Waddell, a parent of child with hoop dreams said, “I think it's wonderful because for the Sea Dawgs to take their time out and give their time to the kids. I really think the community and the kids will appreciate it.” Wilmington Sea Dawg Head Coach Dale Kuhl said when his players get involved in community clinics like this one, despite the height difference, it can be difficult to tell the professionals apart from the kids. “It doesn't matter when you put basketball players around kids you can't tell who's the kid. I mean they absolutely love it.” For the kids it won't be the last time they get to see the professionals in person. Everyone who participated in the clinic received tickets to a Sea Dawgs game.
