UNCW job fair lacks employers

READ MORE: UNCW job fair lacks employers
It's no easy feat finding a job in today's economy. Some UNCW students spent the day trying to get a leg up on their competition at the annual job fair. With unemployment rates up, and job openings at a premium, finding a job isn't what it used to be. “Each spring we typically have 80 to ninety employers. This spring we have 47 and so its down about 40 percent,” said Thom Rakes of the UNCW Career Center. Job ops ranged from tax man to police man, but make no mistake, fewer are hiring, and those that are, have their pick. The UNCW Career Center says appointments have increased 25 to 30 percent, and drop-ins 100 to 200 percent compared to last spring. Both career counselors and employers agree, the best way for students to get that coveted job is to focus the resume, building experience with internships. That may make for the smoothest transition from the dorm room, to the boardroom. Rakes said other UNC campuses have had to cancel their spring job and internship fair because employer response was so low.
