The local probation office

The local probation office in Wilmington is far from perfect, but having worked there for 4 years, I can say that the problems I experienced were nowhere near as bad as have been reported in Wake and Durham counties. I know all of the current Chiefs (they were field officers when I worked there), and know them all to be dedicated professionals who would not accept substandard work from thier officers. Having said that, most of the local problems at the probation/parole office have to do with the field officers being overworked. Their caseloads are significantly higher than the maximum recommended, primarily due to structured sentencing and the incredibly long hiring/training process in filling vacant positions. Also, Blue Line radio is hardly a reliable source for objective facts. Mark Benson tends to be biased in his reporting, with the objective of making himself look like to the solution to all problems in the criminal justice system. His radio show is a continouos negative campaing "attack" ad.
