RALEIGH (AP) -- About 500 people turned out for an immigration rally at the Capitol last night.
That's only about one-fourth of the number that attended last year's event. Organizer Mauricio Castro says one reason is concern backlash from immigration officials.
Many of those wore white and chanted "it can be done." Some of them waved American flags.
The Raleigh rally was just one of ten across the state and hundreds nationwide. One million people walked out of work and school in a nationwide protest a year ago.
Activists in North Carolina want reforms to allow illegal immigrants to gain citizenship and asked for other protections, such as a moratorium on immigration raids and deportations.
The Pew Hispanic Center says about 400-thousand illegal immigrants live in North Carolina.
