Bush defends rejection of war spending bill

READ MORE:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush meets today with Democrats and Republicans to work on an Iraq war funding measure both sides can agree to.

Yesterday, Bush vetoed a bill calling for a troop withdrawal timetable.

Both parties do say the Iraqi government should reach some benchmarks in getting control of the situation there.

In vetoing the bill, Bush said it "makes no sense to tell the enemy when you plan to start withdrawing."

He said the legislation would have set "a date for failure" and would have imposed impossible conditions on military commanders.

Bush also said the bill is loaded with billions in non-emergency spending.
