Despite the troubling unemployment numbers, Forbes magazine reported North Carolina is still a good place to do business. The magazine released its rankings for the best places for business and careers. The survey looked at 200 metropolitan areas, and six Tar Heel cities cracked the top twenty. Raleigh took the top spot and was joined by Durham, Asheville, Wilmington, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte in the top 20 places for business and careers. The Port City finished thirteenth in the entire nation; third for the cost of business, thirty-fourth for job growth projections, and 107th for education. Wilmington Industrial Development's Scott Satterfield said the fact that we have a state port, an international airport, and interstate access helped boost our rankings. Quality health care is one of the biggest benefits for new businesses in our area. Experts say the industry is only going to continue to grow over the next few years right here in the Port City. There are also a few unique industries in our area that make southeastern North Carolina appealing. “We’ve got a great film studio and the opportunities that are coming though there as well as a great tourism environment,” Satterfield explained. Satterfield added a diverse economy, which includes everything from film to pharmaceuticals, helps draw other businesses to the area and is a good indicator for future growth.
