Pender County fire crews on high alert

READ MORE:
HAMPSTEAD -- Fire crews are on high alert in Pender County Thursday night after another blaze in Hampstead. Firefighters responded to the call just before eight Wednesday night, in the same area of Hampstead that burned last week. The fire burned five acres before crews could contain it. Experts say the fire danger in our area is higher than anywhere else in the state. For that reason crews are working around the clock, looking for hot spots. N.C. Forestry Spokesperson Shane Hardee said, "We constantly have aircraft overhead looking for new fires. And now, while we're in a burning ban in the six-county area, they're also looking for people burning who shouldn't be." Hardee would not comment on the cause of the fire, saying simply that it's under investigation. But there has been speculation that there may be an arsonist at work.
