On the way to a billion apps

READ MORE: On the way to a billion apps
Apple has reinvigorated the cell phone industry with its popular iPhone, which is more than just a phone. From finding your car in the parking lot to identifying a song on the radio, there's an iPhone application for just about everything. Now, apple is set to hit one billion application downloads, and they've launched a website to count down. What's behind the iPhone craze? For starters, it can do just about anything. "There's something on there for everyone, so that makes everyone crazy,” said iPhone owner Erica Adams. The Apple online store offers downloadable applications to make a regular cell phone do much more. Apple just released the top 20 free and paid apps. Topping the free chart is Facebook. "I live and die by Facebook on my iPhone. I'm on it all the time. It's so addictive,” said Susan Johnson. The biggest hype on the paid list is a game called Crash Kart. "As you turn the phone, you turn the kart, turn the vehicle, the graphics are great, and it's very responsive, and a lot of fun, and I think it cost five bucks,” said Rod Cartier. Some apps, like the financial calculator and flight tracker are pretty useful. Others are less practical. “The bathroom mirror, where your screen fogs up and you draw your finger across it and you get a clear image and the condensation rolls off of it,” Cartier added. About 40 million more applications need to be downloaded before Apple reaches the one billion mark. A spokesperson for Apple told WWAY that should only take a few weeks. With every download, iPhone owners have a shot at winning prizes, including a ten thousand dollar iTunes gift card and a Macbook computer.
